VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUND TESTING

What is Volatile Organic Compound Testing?

Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are a large group of chemicals that easily evaporate into the air at room temperature. They are commonly released from everyday materials and products, including:

  1. Building materials and furniture

  2. Paints, adhesives, and solvents

  3. Cleaning products and air fresheners

  4. Personal care items

Why VOCs Are a Concern
Exposure to VOCs can have short-term and long-term health effects:

  • Short-term exposure – Irritation of eyes, nose, throat; headaches; dizziness; nausea.

  • Aggravated conditions – Individuals with asthma or other respiratory issues may experience worsened symptoms.

  • Long-term risks – Certain VOCs, such as formaldehyde and benzene, have been linked to central nervous system damage, liver and kidney issues, and increased risk of cancer.

Sources of VOCs Indoors

  1. Off-gassing from new furniture, flooring, or building materials.

  2. Renovation or construction activities.

  3. Daily use of products such as cleaning supplies, fragrances, or personal care items.
